Root-end surgery
A small procedure at the tip of a root, for when a root canal alone can't reach the problem.
In root-end surgery, Dr. Ahn numbs the area, opens the gum beside the tooth, removes the infected tissue at the tip of the root and seals the end of the root. She works under the microscope. It is offered when retreatment would not reach the problem or isn't an option, and she explains why she is suggesting it.

Before you decide
Comfort, choices and what to expect
Comfort
The area is numbed before the procedure begins, and you can ask for a break. Tell us what has worked for you at dental visits before, and bring someone to drive you if you would like to.
If you wait, or choose not to treat
If the problem at the root tip isn't treated, it may continue to grow. Removing the tooth is the other choice, and your dentist or an oral surgeon can discuss it with you.
Risks and after-care
Risks include swelling and soreness for a few days, bruising, an infection that does not clear and a tooth that does not heal as hoped. Dr. Ahn explains these first and gives you written after-care instructions.
How it is billed
Your plan may treat this differently from general dental care. We give you a written estimate before treatment, and the fees page explains how paying works. This site never shows a price.

Questions
About root-end surgery
Is this the same as a root canal?
No. A root canal treats the inside of the tooth. Root-end surgery treats the tip of the root from the outside, through the gum.
How long is recovery?
Soreness and swelling are common for a few days. Dr. Ahn gives you written instructions and tells you when to call.
Do I need a referral for surgery?
Your dentist's referral is how most patients arrive. If you don't have one, call us and we will talk it through.
